Activity Overview

Fort Negley is a historic site, it is the largest fortification built during the Civil war, the fort was occupied by the Union Army in Nashville. Fort Negley was built in 1862 by more than 2,700 African-American men that worked for three months to build the fort. The fort was opened to the public in 2004, the visitor center was constructed in 2007. The visitor center has a theater, exhibit area and a plaza. Fort Negley Park and the visitor center are located near downtown Nashville, the park is open only during daylight hours. The fort and the visitor center are open Tuesday through Saturday and all year round.

Things to Do

  • Visit historic Fort Negley and take self-guided tours, this preserved civil war site offers accessible walkways and interpretive panels for sharing history with the visitors.
  • The visitor center has interactive exhibits, and two videos that discuss the history of Fort Negley. The walkways surrounding the fort can be covered in around 1 hr.
  • The visitor center maintains a data on the civil war soldiers and sailors, visitors can look up a soldier or sailor's name in the civil war database.
  • There are nice views of the city from the fort site.
  • Shop at the gift shop in the visitor center, proceeds go to maintaining the site.
