Activity Overview
Don't miss historic Fort Adams, the current version of which was active during five of our country's wars from the Mexican-American War in the mid-1800's to World War II. The original Fort Adams was garrisoned during the War of 1812, and, after this war, was replaced with the larger fort that you can tour today.
Deactivated in 1950, the Fort became a Rhode Island State Park in 1965 and a National Historic Landmark in 1985. It currently serves as the site for the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals and, in 2012, hosted the America's Cup World Series.
On an official, guided tour of the fort, one will see underground tunnels, officers' quarters and scenic views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay, while also receiving an American history lesson filled with facts about military culture, and architecture and engineering from the past 180 years.
Things to Do
- Held Saturdays and Sundays at 10:00 a.m., a Storm the Fort Tour will allow you to experience the fort in a "first person attack scenario."
- From atop the Fort walls, ride down the 400 foot long zipline, then hunt for geocache boxes.
- Take a walk along portions or all of the 2.5 mile perimeter of Fort Adams State Park and appreciate the stunning views of Newport Bridge and its harbor and bay.
- Have a picnic, fly a kite, or play some frisbee on the grounds of the park.
Fort Adams Insider Tips
- Admission to the park grounds is free.
- Guided tours are reasonably priced, free for children under 6, and discounted for active military, seniors, college students and AAA members.
- Self-guided tours are only a few dollars but do not include access to the underground tunnels or scenic overlooks and may be suspended without notice due to weather or special events.
