The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a one-of-a-kind underground attraction in Fresno, California that were created by Sicilian immigrant Baldassare Forestiere. After coming to America in 1901, he decided to create an underground world modeled after the ancient Roman catacombs that had fascinated him as a child. However, his catacombs feature beautiful courtyards and grottos that he created by hand over 40 years in his spare time. He also planted all different kinds of fruit trees at various underground levels, making the site a true work of genius. This 10-acre underground attraction is one of Fresno's truly unmissable attractions.
Things to Do
- The only way to explore the underground gardens is by taking the hour-long tour, where you'll learn all about the unique attraction made by Baldassare Forestiere.
- Look at all of the beautiful fruit trees that blossom in the gardens throughout the year! They grow oranges, lemons, mulberries, kumquats, quinces, jujubes, almonds, figs, pomegranates, dates, and many other delicious foods.
- Bring along a camera to take photos of the underground gardens - just make sure not to bring along a tripod or do any filming.
Forestiere Underground Gardens Insider Tips
- If you have a college student in the family, make sure they bring along a valid student ID in order to take advantage of the discounted admission price.
- Dress for the weather - while the underground tunnels are a bit cooler than surface temperatures, they can still be very hot during the peak of summer. Feel free to bring along a bottle of water in order to stay hydrated.
- Be aware that tours may be cancelled due to wet weather - rain makes the underground site too muddy for tours.
