The experiment of the Floating Ms examines solubility. You see, some of the M&M candy is soluble in water and some is not. In this case, the colorful dyes are soluble in water but the translucent candy shell is not. A fun one for kids of all ages - this experiment proves why M&Ms truly do "melt in your mouth and not in your hand."
Materials Needed
- M&M Candies
- Water
- Clear Glass Bowl
How to Do It
- Fill the glass bowl 3/4 of the way full with water.
- Carefully drop several M&Ms into the water.
- Let the candies soak for about 20 minutes or so.
- Watch what happens to the candies over this time period. You will start to see the colored dyes from the M&Ms dissolving into the water.
- Eventually, you will see a clear shell seal and the M that is printed on the M&M flat to the surface.
