Activity Overview
The Flandrau Planetarium has been around since the 1970's amazing visitors with shows about the wonders of our night sky. Located on the campus of the University of Arizona its aim has always been to spark interest in the world of science. They have a host of fun and interesting shows that change regularly. While there is obviously a focus on astronomy they also have programs which cover chemistry, physics, marine subjects and more.
Things to Do
- Take your kids on one of the Planetarium's special camp-in overnighters. This is a particularly fun way to interact with what the facility has to enter. They will get to try out hands-on activities, a movie and have the gallery and exhibition area all to themselves. A late night snack and breakfast in the morning are provided too you will be happy to know!
- While you are visiting be sure not to miss the exhibit "The Best of the Best: Prize Minerals from the Vaults of Arizona's Collectors". The University of Arizona is home to one of the top mineral and gem collections in the world and in this exhibit you can see some of the choicest cuts!
- Not only will you be dazzled by the amazing rocks on display but you will also find out about the history of mineral collection in the state.
Flandrau Planetarium Insider Tips
- Flandrau also run an Observatory that is entirely run by volunteers. Normally the Observatory is open from Thursday until Saturday 7 pm - 10 pm. It is a good idea to ring ahead to make sure it will be open in case the volunteers are not available. Also take a look at the Skywatcher's Guide they provide online for all amateur sky watchers!
