Five Civilized Tribes Museum

Activity Overview

Learn more about the art, history, and culture of Native American tribes of Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole. The museum is located in the two-storey Union Indian Agency building, previously used as office and home of the Indian Agency Superintendent and his family. The building is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places.

Things to Do

• On the ground floor, get to know more about the lives and history of the Five Civilized Tribes through various photos and artifacts. The displays change throughout the year. Check their Facebook page for more information on the latest exhibits.
• Visit the second floor for the art displays from the museum's permanent collections as well as current works, including those from the Student Art Show. Traditional works from the tribes are displayed and some are up for sale. See artworks from Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee Creek, and Seminole descents such as Jerome Tiger, Troy Anderson, Virginia Stroud, and Deborah Duval.
• Check out the Gift Shop for unique traditional souvenir items or visit the library to read publications or to watch a film.

Five Civilized Tribes Museum Insider Tips

• Schedule your visit to the museum and include other activities such as attending Art Under the Oaks in April and the Azalea Festival in Muskogee. The museum is small and only takes an hour to explore.
