Activity Overview

Knitting and crocheting are fun activities and can be great self confidence and skill building activities for children. The tools needed for these activities can sometimes be difficult to manipulate for tiny hands. Finger knitting is a great way to introduce children to these crafts. Finger knitting is a relaxing activity that will be loved by crafters of all ages.

With a bit of patience and concentration, it is an easy skill to master, and the resulting chains have a variety of uses, from hula hoop loomed rugs and textiles, friendship bracelets, flowers to bookmarks and hair ties. Finger kitting can be done with any type of yarn. Different colors and textures add tremendous visual interest to the finished product.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn ( I like to use bulkier yarn but any yarn will do)
  • Your fingers

How to Do It

  1. Start by placing the yarn in between your thumb and the palm of your hand, so that the string drapes between the thumb and forefinger and the tail hangs behind your hand.
  2. Pick up the yarn that leads to the ball, leaving the tail in between your thumb and hand. Bring the yarn behind your middle finger and over your ring finger.
  3. Next, wrap the yarn around your pinky, behind your ring finger and over your middle finger.

  4. Head back again in the reverse direction.
  5. Bring the yarn behind your middle finger and over your ring finger.
  6. Then, wrap it around your pinky, behind your ring finger, over your middle finger.
  7. Starting with your pinky finger, bring the lower loop on your finger over the upper loop and over your finger.
  8. Continue this process on each finger, bringing the lower loop over the upper loop and over your finger.
  9. Bring the tail in between your index finger and your middle finger.
  10. Repeat.
  11. Now, wrap the yarn around your index finger.
  12. Repeat the over and under pattern until you have two loops on each finger.
  13. Pull the lower loops over all the upper loops and over the finger, starting at the pinky.
  14. Keep repeating this process and it can go on and on and on.
