Activity Overview

Kids of all ages can create these adorable flower fabric yo-yos from scraps of leftover fabric and turn them into the prettiest of long lasting flowers. This is an enjoyable project for children who are learning to sew. With a few simple steps, crafters of all ages can fabricate lovely flowers that can be used to make cards, headbands, decorative pins, wire stemmed flowers, beautiful bouquets and more.

Materials Needed

  • Two pieces of fabric that compliment each other
  • Needle and thread
  • Buttons
  • Crafts Wire
  • a cup and a saucer
  • Paper and scissors
  • Optional: Safety Pins, Glue Gun, Card stock paper, Headbands

How to Make It

  1. Trace a cup on one piece of fabric, and a saucer on the other.
  2. Cut a piece of thread that will be long enough to go all of the way around the large circle.
  3. Sew a loose running stitch around the edge of the fabric.
  4. When you reach the beginning, pull the thread so that it gathers the fabric.
  5. Secure the gap in the fabric with a a few stitches and tie off the thread.
  6. Repeat this same process with the smaller circle of fabric.
  7. Lay the smaller yo-yo on top of the larger yo-yo and sew a button to the center through both yo-yos.
  8. Make one or several. Glue to safety pins to make broaches, glue to headbands or barrettes to make decorative headbands, attach to craft wire to make a bouquet or glue to cardstock and draw a stem for unique homemade notecards.
