Activity Overview
The Eastern Market is an historic institution of Washington D.C. It was first opened in 1873 and after a bad fire on April 30th 2007 it was renovated and re-opened in June of 2009. Inside the market is divided into a north and south end where various goods and fresh produce are sold and where community events take place. Over the weekends the market really comes to life with an outdoor market and a farmers market.
Things to Do
- The main focus of the Eastern Market is its South Hall. Here vendors sell high quality produces like meat, poultry, seafood, pasta, baked goods and cheeses. There is a wide assortment of types available so you should be able to find exactly what you are looking for, and a few surprises to boot!
- A visit to the Eastern Market is particularly special on weekends as the market plays host to farmer vendors along with their regular indoor stands.
- Much of the food these farmers sell is sourced from rural parts of the surrounding states so you know it is fresh. Plus you are also supporting local businesses and workers. So everybody wins!
- Inject some Latin passion into your week! The Eastern Market Tango Club meets every Thursday at 7 pm. They offer three classes for different abilities including beginners.
