Activity Overview

Once you step foot in Charleston, you would know that the town played a big role in the history of the country. You can say the same about Charleston in the case of performing arts. America's first theatre, the Dock Street Theatre, opened here in the year 1736. The building has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years but it has kept its pioneer brand of theatrical arts. Dock Street Theatre produces more than 120 performances per season with an audience number reaching more than 40,000 annually. The theatre is now home to the largest theatre production company in South Carolina, the Charleston Stage Company.

Things to Do

  • Check the season performances of the Charleston Stage Company. Choose from a variety of shows that can go from comedy, drama, suspense, or musicals for kids. Dress up and take the family for an elegant night out at the theatre. The small, intimate theatre, the ornate embellishments, and the fancy woodwork will make you feel like you have stepped back in time.
  • In case you come to Charleston off-season and there are no performances that you can catch, visit the theatre for a tour. The building opens as a tourist destination during off-season and the staff will gladly engage you with the theatre's history.
