Activity Overview

Originally founded in back in 1893, The Denver Art Museum is one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast, with a collection of more than 70,000 works of art divided between 10 permanent collections including African, American Indian, Asian, European and American, modern and contemporary, pre-Columbian, photography, Spanish Colonial, textile, and western American art.

Things to See & Do

The museum if made up of two primary buildings. The first, known as the "North Building", was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates and was opened in 1971.

The second, The "Hamilton Building" has a design that recalls the peaks of the Rocky Mountains and geometric rock crystals found in the foothills near Denver. The building is covered in 9,000 titanium panels that reflect the Colorado sunshine.

  • Free days are every first Saturday of the month.
  • Please Don't Touch - Even the lightest touch can damage a work of art.
  • Photograph with Care - Photography for personal use only, and only in the permanent collection galleries. Cameras must be handheld and no flash photography or tripods are allowed.
  • Photography in the temporary exhibition galleries is not permitted
  • Sketch with Pencils - Feel free to sketch with pencil in notebooks 14 by 17 inches or smaller. Colored pencils and ink pens are not allowed in the galleries, except in designated art making areas.
  • Strollers are available at our welcome centers, and family restrooms are located in both buildings.
  • Visit the Kids & Families page.
  • Stow Your Bags & Packages – There are free lockers on level one of both buildings.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed anywhere in the gallery.
