Share:

Activity Overview

Get crafty and enjoy a little gardening with the kids all in one project. This Decoupage Flower Pot Craft is perfect for children of all ages to personalize their own flower pots in a decorative and creative way. Those traditional clay pots can be rather dull, so get inspired and liven them up with a few easy steps. These crafty flower pots make great gifts and terrific home accents. Admire your artwork as you watch your seeds grow into beautiful plants and flowers.

Materials Needed

  • 1 small clay flowerpot
  • Magazine clippings of animals or flowers (seed catalogs are great for this)
  • Paint and paintbrush or paint pens
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • Soil and flower seeds
  • Small card to attach to flowerpot with ribbon to match
  • Clear acrylic spray

How to Do It

  1. Give your child a miniature clay flowerpot and a variety of art supplies for decorating their flowerpot.
  2. Have them start by painting the top rim of the pot. When it is dry, they can add polka dots or paint a name or other decorations on the rim. They can also paint the entire pot.
  3. Allow pot to dry.
  4. Next, select the magazine clippings that you desire.
  5. Using a foam brush, apply a small amount of Mod Podge to an area of the pot and stick the magazine art in place, smoothing out with your fingers. Continue this process until the pout is decorated to your liking.
  6. Then paint a layer of Mod Podge over the entire pot. Allow to dry completely.
  7. Since the pot will come in contact with moisture from the soil, spray the pot with clear acrylic and let dry.
  8. Then have the child fill their pot with potting soil and add a few fast growing seeds. Place the flowerpots in a sunny spot.
  9. Once the flowers have bloomed, complete the project by making a gift tag; and sign their name. Have the child color and cut out tag.
  10. Use ribbon to attach tag around flowerpot.

We have painted a clay pot every year since my oldest was born! We always get the same size pot and give one to each grandparent! They love having them, and we love making them!
