Activity Overview

You will want to involve the children in this fun craft concoction which yields vibrant and intense colored watercolor paints. The process involves some neat chemical reactions that will enthrall kids and adults alike. This water color paint lasts longer, is made of natural materials and is non toxic and non staining. This lively watercolor paint concoction will become a tradition in your home as it is in mine.

Materials you will need

  • 4 Tablespoons of White Vinegar
  • 4 Tablespoons of Corn Starch
  • 8Tbs of baking soda
  • 2 Teaspoons of corn syrup
  • Food coloring
  • Plastic egg carton, muffin pan, or an ice cube tray
  • Bowl for mixing ingredients
  • Craft sticks for mixing in food coloring

How it is Made

  1. Combine the vinegar and baking soda and mix in large bowl. When the reaction stops, add the corn syrup and corn starch and stir.
  2. Stir until the powders are completely blended and dissolved.
  3. Pour the the fascinating not quite liquid and not quite solid mixture into the sectioned off compartments of your choice of containers.
  4. Stir in the food colorings of your choice and stir the mixtures with the craft sticks. For gel coloring, use a small dab and for liquid drops use 6-7 drops for vibrant color. Stir thoroughly until completely mixed.
  5. Let the thick substance sit for 24- 48 hours until completely hardened.
  6. They may look mottled or crack during the drying process, but this is okay. Once completely dry, they are ready to use. Just dip a paintbrush in water, in the paint and onto the paper.
