Activity Overview

Buffalo Bayou is a river that flows through the heart of Houston, Texas. Historically, it is famous as the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, which was the final battle of the Texas Revolution. Today, one of its most prominent features is the new Buffalo Bayou Park, which features nature trails, play areas, a dog park, live performance spaces, and running, hiking, and cycling trails that are enjoyed by visitors of all ages. If you're looking for a place in downtown Houston where you can enjoy nature, head to Buffalo Bayou and take advantage of the many outdoor recreation activities it provides!

Things to Do

• Go for a family hike, walk, or bike ride along Buffalo Bayou Park's trails! You'll be astounded by the scenic river views as you explore the trails. You can print a trail guide here.
• Take your teen to the Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark, which features 30,000 square feet of space where skaters of all skill levels can practice their best moves for free. Make sure to bring along a helmet - they're required!
• Don't miss the chance to see the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony! Between 200,000 and 300,000 Mexican free-tailed bats live under the Waugh Drive Bridge. You can watch them head out into the night to hunt for food from a viewing deck in the park.

• Bring your dog along on your family outing and take them to the 2-acre Johnny Steele Dog Park! They'll be spoiled by all of its features, including small and large dog ponds, water play areas, a dog washing station, shade structures, and drinking fountains with special spigots for dogs.
