Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary & Audubon Center

Activity Overview

Travel about an hour from Louisville to the Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary & Audubon Center, where you will find over 370 acres of woodlands and meadows alongside the Kentucky River and 6 miles of trails that traverse various types of terrain, including two ponds surrounded by forest and a gorge with limestone, minerals and fossils alongside.

The Sanctuary is active in educating the public and provides presentations about nature and wildlife to thousands of teachers, students and families every year.

Things to Do

• Visitors to the sanctuary can take a trail map and informative, educational materials provided at a kiosk near the parking lot and set forth on any number of trails. The bird blind is also of interest as well as the nature center.

• Families can enjoy a hike on one of the many trails - creating a nature scavenger hunt as you go can make the adventure even more fun. (Find 3 things that are green, something that crawls, something that flies, etc..).
• Attend one of the Sanctuary's Bird Walks or live presentations on such birds as raptors, bald eagles, crested caracaras, and additional birds of prey.
• Participate in one of the activities, such as making winter treats for backyard wildlife.
