Activity Overview

Hop aboard the Blue Heron, a 40' pontoon that will take you on a cruise to see some of the finest nature that the state of Tennessee has to offer. From March through to November every year Blue Heron Nature Cruises run a variety of tours that allow you to get up close and personal with the animals and plant life in the waterways around Ashland City some 40 minutes northwest of Nashville. A great way to get a taste of the Tennessee wildlife.

Things to Do

  • Many tours are offered by Blue Heron Nature Cruises. A good one for families with young children is the 3 hour kids adventure cruise. This tour includes an hour spent on an island beach or playground and also allows you to bring your own picnic to enjoy with your family.
  • The 2 hour sunset cruise is ideal for couples looking for a little alone time. The Nature Cruise is the standard 2 hour tour allowing you to get a real sense of the beautiful nature that is so common in these parts.
  • If you are a serious wildlife enthusiast and you want to get a more in-depth feel for the area you can try the 4 hour Harpeth River cruise which provides a wealth of impressive scenery.
  • The Captain for your tour is Jim Steele a captain with over 25 years of experience out on the waters. He is a calm but interesting captain, knowledgeable about the area and its variety of habitats. He is also welcoming to the people who climb aboard with him so be sure to ask him any questions which spring to mind!

Blue Heron Nature Cruises Insider Tips

  • Be advised that the Blue Heron pontoon used for all tours cannot accommodate passengers who weigh in excess of 280 lbs. Also electric wheelchairs and scooters can't come aboard. If you or someone you are travelling with has some kind of special needs it is advisable to ring ahead to make arrangements before the tour.
  • You will most likely be out in the hot sun so remember that hats and sunscreen are essential!
