Explore how flowers bloom with this experiment on absorption. If you have ever wondered what causes a flower to bloom. In dry weather, many flowers will close up their petal and after a rain, the petals will open up. In this experiment, the paper will gradually soak up the water causing the paper to expand and the paper flower will open up. If given time, the flower will open up completely before your eyes.
Materials Needed
- White paper
- Scissors
- Colored Markers
- A plate
- Water
How to Do It
- Draw a 5 inch flower with a circle in the center and several petals.
- Color the flower in with markers
- Cut carefully around the petals of each flower.
- Carefully fold the petals in toward the center, layering one on top of the other.
- Add some water to a plate and place the flower folded petal side up in the center of the plate.
- Watch the flower carefully.
