Activity Overview
At one time Belle Meade Plantation was a massive, sprawling estate famous for breeding some of the greatest racing horses in the U.S. It was so renowned that not one but five different American Presidents came dine during its heyday. Now things are somewhat different as 5,400 acres have been reduced to the more manageable size of 30. However with magnificent original buildings still extant and a fabulously interesting visitor's center which brings its former days to life the Belle Meade Plantation is a fascinating living museum to a bygone era in the history of America.
Things to Do
- An organized tour of the Plantation is probably the best way to connect with the estate's past. You will be led around the grounds by a costumed guide. Start your walk in the Plantation's Greek Revival mansion before setting out to the other buildings around the grounds such as the horse stable, the carriage house and the mausoleum. The beautifully kept gardens are worth the price of admission alone.
- Wine lovers should stop into the Winery at Belle Meade Plantation. The Winery has been open since 2009 and offers excellent wines made right on the estate. They also sell a collection of tasty condiments like mustard, jelly and a variety of sauces. It could be the perfect souvenir from a visit!
