Activity Overview

The collection of the Bechtler Museum was amassed over 70 years by two generations of the Swiss Bechtler family. After making Charlotte his home Andreas Bechtler decided to commit this extensive collection to the Queen City and the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art now provides its home. Included in the permanent collection are works by many of the most important painters of the 20th Century including Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacommetti and more. The building, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, is a joy and hosts regular cultural events.

Things to Do

• Peruse and enjoy the permanent and traveling art exhibitions within the museum.
• Amongst the ongoing events at the Museum is the Jazz at the Bechtler series. Jazz concerts take place at least once a month paying tribute to greats like Charlie Parker, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and others.
• Music & The Museum is another music series which pairs classical works played by small ensembles with presentations about some of the artworks in the Museum's collection.
• Modernism & Film is another series which plays monthly documentaries and movies that explores themes of architecture, contemporary and modern art, design and engineering.
• Guest speakers are often invited along to grant insight into the films.

Bechtler Museum of Modern Art Insider Tips

• The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art is just one part of Charlotte's Levine Center for the Arts. This four acre project includes other significant centers of culture such as the Mint Museum Uptown, the Knight Theatre, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts & Culture and the Duke Energy Center. A good way to take in much of what the Center has to offer is to buy their access ticket which grants admission to three of the locations at a cut price for 48 hours.
• The Museum is closed on Tuesdays.
