Activity Overview
The Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is a unique place where you can get up close and personal with the animal kingdom. The Zoo itself is a non-profit organization that works to rescue and rehabilitate domestic and exotic animals, and their intimate facility gives you a chance to see these animals close-up and learn about them and the Zoo.
Because the Austin Zoo is a non-profit, it relies on the donations and admissions fees to operate. You are under no obligation to donate, but if you have a favorite animal, you can choose to sponsor them once you visit the Zoo. There are even special events and classes offered throughout the year which you can take to learn more about your favorite animals.
Things to Do
- The Zoo recently welcomed 21 new friends into their home including three black bear cubs! There are now over 300 animals to visit in the Zoo, ranging from big cats and exotic birds to goats and llamas, even a couple of lemurs!

Austin Zoo Insider Tips
- You are welcome to bring in outside food and drink and picnic on the grounds. It is recommended that you bring your own water bottles as there are no water fountains at the Zoo.
- The Austin Zoo is not a typical zoo. It is an animal rescue and is therefore a little smaller than most conventional zoos. It will only take 90 minutes to walk through, but it is recommended that you wear comfortable, close-toed shoes as the path is made of dirt and granite.
