Activity Overview
The Atlanta Cyclorama is the largest oil painting in the world and depicts the Battle of Atlanta fought during the Civil War. This enormous painting can be seen to day by visitors from a viewing platform that rotates 360 degrees. It shows all the significant events of the battle in brilliant detail. There is also a diorama in front of the painting that was added in 1936. This diorama adds a depth of 30 feet to the display.
Things to Do
- Although there are other worthy exhibits to be enjoyed here the highlight is undoubtedly the Cyclorama. Even the dimensions of this painting are incredible. Altogether it weighs 10,000 lbs., it has a circumference of 358 ft. and covers a space of 15,030 square feet. The painting and the story of the battle are brought to life with music, narration and sound effects.
- Aside from the Cyclorama there is a lot here which visitors can enjoy. When you enter there is a 14 minute film all about the events leading up to the battle of Atlanta. One you have seen the cyclorama you can explore the Civil War Museum.
- Spread across two floors you will find videos, interactive touchscreens, photographs and original artifacts that tell the story of the war between the Union and the Confederacy.
- At its center is the steam locomotive Texas which was part of the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.
